OnOff SHIM (micro-USB) Raspberry Pi Power Switch Hat. Add a on / off power switch to your Raspberry Pi with this SHIM.

Add a compact yet functional power switch to your Raspberry Pi with the OnOff SHIM!

SHIMs (Shove Hardware in the Middle) are a new series of small, affordable, and practical boards. Measuring just 0.8mm thick (excluding mounted components), they’re designed to solder directly onto your Pi’s GPIO pins if desired, allowing compatibility with HATs and pHATs.

How to Use

Connect your micro-USB power supply to the OnOff SHIM's micro-B connector. Press the button once to power on and boot your Raspberry Pi. After installing the software (details below), you can press and hold the button for one second to safely shut down your Pi and completely cut power.

Features

  • Ultra-compact SHIM design
  • 0.8mm thick PCB
  • Works with HATs and pHATs
  • On/off button located in the corner
  • Micro-B power input
  • Red status LED
  • Optional breakout pins for external momentary button
  • 2x6 female header included
  • Supports power supplies up to 2.5A
  • Software daemon for clean shutdowns
  • Compatible with all 40-pin Raspberry Pi and Raspberry Pi Zero models (see note on Pi 4 & 5 below)
  • Requires soldering

Software

The clean shutdown software is easy to install with a one-line command. The daemon monitors BCM pin 17 for a low signal (button press) to initiate a safe shutdown. Before powering off completely, BCM pin 4 is pulled low to cut the power entirely.

To install, open a terminal and run:

curl https://get.pimoroni.com/onoffshim | bash

Notes

While the OnOff SHIM can power a Raspberry Pi 4 with a 2.5A micro-B power supply, the Pi 4's recommended power requirement is 3A. Using lower power supplies may lead to issues, especially with high-demand USB devices.
