Usage Instructions:

1. Assemble the kit according to the included assembly manual
2. Download the Pi-Top OS image from https://www.pi-top.com/resources/download-os
3. Install Raspberry Pi Imager: https://www.raspberrypi.com/software/
4. Format your MicroSD Card
5. Use Raspberry Pi Imager to install the Pi-Top OS to the Micro SD Card
   1. Run Raspberry Pi Imager as Administrator     (Right-click → "Run as Administrator")     
   2. Click "Choose OS"     
   3. Scroll to the bottom → click “Use custom”    
   4. Select the pitop-os-bookworm*.img.xz file you downloaded     
   5. Click “Choose Storage” → Select your SD card     
   6. Click “Write”
6. Place the SD Card in the Raspberry Pi and boot up the Pi

Pi-Top Troubleshooting:

• Issue: I installed pi-topOS on the SD Card and I see the green light flashing on the Raspberry Pi but the pi-top screen is not turning on.

• Resolution: Connect the HDMI cable from your Raspberry Pi to an HDMI TV or monitor and see if you see the desktop. If yes, we'll set the Raspberry Pi up while connected to your TV to force HDMI Output via Config
  1. Edit /boot/config.txt via terminal (on your TV screen): sudo nano /boot/config.txt 
  2. Make sure the following lines exist (or edit them if already there): 
  • hdmi_force_hotplug=1
  • hdmi_drive=2 
  • config_hdmi_boost=7 
  • hdmi_group=2 
  • hdmi_mode=82  # 1080p @ 60Hz     
  • hdmi_force_hotplug=1 is especially important — it forces HDMI output even if no monitor is detected (which can happen if the hub board fails to return EDID info which sometimes happens). 
  • Save (Ctrl+O), exit (Ctrl+X), then reboot: sudo reboot
  • If you prefer to edit the config file manually instead of using the terminal you can:
    Open File Manager as Root (Superuser) You can launch the file manager with root privileges so it's able to write to protected system files: Open the Raspberry Pi menu → Accessories → Terminal. Type the following command to run the file manager as root: sudo pcmanfm In the file manager window that pops up, navigate to /boot, open config.txt, make your edits, and save normally. This runs the editor with full permissions.
