This Triac is like a standard transistor on steroids! It can conduct current in either direction when the gate voltage is exceeded in either direction (both positive AND negative!). Commonly used for AC light dimmers and motor controllers.

Triacs are found in nearly every home due to their ability to control AC (Alternating Current) such as the power you'll get from a wall outlet. Unlike a regular transistor that can only transfer electricity in one direction, a triac can handle both positive and negative voltages across its terminals. Likewise, it can be controlled by a gate voltage on the center pin that is either positive or negative. Some of the most popular uses for a Triac include bi-directional DC motor control, AC lamp dimmers & Electric Fan Speed Controllers.
